Social responsibility

We are a company that, although present in large cities, upholds the purpose of making our services accessible to people in remote and underserved regions. We plan products for this, such as sales of prepaid cell phone plans and sale of unlocked cell phones. We were the first operator to adopt both practices in Brazil’s heartland. This means we are helping to generate employment and income.

The UN’s Human Development report states that new technologies have become crucial to the development process for the whole society, favoring sectors such as healthcare, education and agriculture, all seen as essential in the fight against poverty.

Community relations

We are partners and one of the sponsors of Instituto Algar, a non-profit organization for developing people and transforming lives in the communities where we are present. For 20 years, the entity has been running structured, medium-term social programs to help educate children, adolescents and young people through education, culture, sports and volunteering.

In 2021, with 86 social organizations, two cultural and six sporting proponents, our programs benefited 4,776 children, teens and young people. In addition, one-off training activities in addition to voluntary actions impacted more than 36,000 people from communities from all over Brazil and three other Latin American countries. R$1.9 million was directly invested for this purpose. Through Algar Institute, we have the following initiatives underway:

Success case in education, the program, which has a partnership with 28 social organizations, was designed to substantially increase the number of young people equipped with key skills for the job market and life in general. The initiative covers social organizations that replicate methodology dedicated to developing behavioral skills with a focus on young people aged 15 and over. 179 students from ten classes were certified - with 50% of the participants concentrated in Minas Gerais - and more than 500 people participated in specific training activities related to the job market. A highlight among our initiatives was a group known as Super Talents, which focused on young people who stood out for their skills in mathematics and logical reasoning. We ran this program in partnership with Doar Futuro (donate future). Participants earned 72 international certifications in Java, Linux, PO and Scrum Master.

This program was developed with Cia de Talentos and 16 partner companies. The idea is to match university students and companies to support the development of soft skills sought in the job market, so that participants will be better prepared and able to make more responsible professional choices. The initiative offers activities, experiences and tools for self-knowledge and development for young university students or those who have graduated in the previous year. In 2021, there were 1,681 graduates in 14 groups from the Journey for the Future immersion course. In addition, more than 7,000 people were impacted by webinars and other training activities.

The program’s purpose is to create the conditions needed to ensure a better future for children and adolescents through sports, the arts and culture. Activities were held online or in-person, depending on the pandemic situation at different times during the year. Over the year, this initiative benefited 2,049 children and teens from partner social organizations in Uberlândia (MG), Campinas (SP) and Ribeirão Preto (SP), who were offered places on five cultural and ten sports projects that were sponsored through incentive laws. Also, during the year, Algar Institute offered an income generation program for the families of students served by the Transforma program, in addition to places for the community, and 37 participants earned certificates for eight modules.

In the first half of 2021, we launched a project named ‘Tomorrow’s compass point’ (Bússolas do Amanhã) as a Compliance Team initiative in partnership with Algar Institute. Its purpose is to highlight integrity as a value that is part of our culture and extend it to society. The project’s educational initiatives help provide ethical and moral education for children and young people to be responsible citizens aware of their duties and capable of fighting for their rights. These ideas are spread by valuing differences and equal opportunities for everybody. Through the ‘Tomorrow’s compass points’ project, we are cultivating enduring social values and developing students to become responsible citizens while holding fun activities to explain how evils arise from corruption.

We believe in developing people, and we are constantly investing for this purpose. However, in addition to involving our professionals for this purpose, we support the dream of knowledge being shared with the entire community to make a difference to people’s lives. On this basis, the program was started to help the behavioral and technical skills needed to ensure personal and professional evolution. This training program, which is totally free of charge and open to the community, covers subjects such as: basic mathematics, basic Portuguese, elementary computing, financial education and ethics, teamwork, communication, negotiation, innovation, leadership/attitude, and mental health. Since its roll-out in July 2021, there have been over 2,000 page views, including internal and external visitors.

Incentivized projects

We have a multidisciplinary committee consisting of representatives from internal areas, Instituto Algar and Algar Holding, whose task is assessing projects applying for funds awarded under incentive law (spending on cultural activities may be used to offset tax liabilities). Our analysis in this respect checks to ensure that an initiative meets requirements such as getting a regulatory entity’s authorization and being capable of helping develop local communities in which we operate. In 2021, R$3.4 million was allocated to sporting and cultural projects.

Volunteering

Our volunteering program encourages associates to take part in social activities overseen by Algar Institute. Several different volunteering opportunities are available. On the educational front, we are developing ongoing initiatives using our own methods to provide significant learning experiences that benefit students at partner public-system schools.

We also hold so-called specific initiatives, which are broader coverage activities designed by our committees to meet specific needs identified for a community or for specific dates such as Children’s Day or Christmas.

In 2021, we developed 315 specific and ongoing initiatives involving 2,782 volunteers, in addition to 31 committees and 57 leaders and co-leaders, which benefited 28,616 people from 24 cities. There were more than 25,000 items collected, 12 tons of food donated and over 6,000 volunteer hours, totaling more than half a million. (sic)
